1969 Hammond B3
This instrument is very special to me. I found it in the corner of a Calgary music store in 1992. It has been on tour with me for years, and still works like a charm. I have retired it to The Station Recording Studio here in Calgary where I do a ton of sessions on it. I started renting this B3 out immediately when I got it. Ray Charles, Booker T, Deep Purple, Jimmy McGriff, Robbie King, Doug Riley, Richard Bell, Dr John, and many more of my favourite organists have performed on it.
“The Mellencamp Accordion”
When I was a teenager I will never forget hearing the John Mellencamp record “The Lonesome Jubilee”. It was so refreshing to hear accordion used in such an innovative rock and roll way. Accordion and fiddle playing beautiful unison melody lines, I couldn’t stop spinning that record….John Cascella was the man behind all of the hooky accordion lines on that record, unfortunately he passed away in 1992. In 2006 his estate sold off a bunch of his gear and I purchased the accordion. I love this instrument, it has literally been all over the world with me and I have used it on every tour since and have played it on a ton of records. This instrument has a spirit and a vibe to it that is just plain spooky.
Here is a video of John playing it on stage back in the 80’s, Check it out!!
